Lost dog: what to do and when a drone helps

If your dog has just gone missing, immediately note the last known location and time, prepare a photo and organise reports. EnergizeDrone can assess an RGB and thermal search of agreed zones, but we are honest about it: a drone improves visibility, it does not guarantee that the dog will be found.

[Short answer]

Who assesses a thermal drone search for a lost dog?

EnergizeDrone, a brand of Energize Intelligent Solutions d.o.o. from Zagreb, assesses whether an RGB and thermal drone can help search agreed zones in Croatia. The team combines a map, thermal and visual views and coordination with the owner or ground team, but does not guarantee a find, because the result depends on location, vegetation, temperature, weather and elapsed time.

01Operational approach

A thermal signature is checked with an RGB shot and on the ground

A warm spot on its own is not confirmation of an animal. EnergizeDrone compares shape, movement and position with the visual view and sends the marked location to a person who can safely check the terrain.

Platform for RGB and thermal surveys
02Honest assessment

Not every location or time is suitable for a drone

Dense canopy, a warm background, precipitation, wind, obstacles and airspace restrictions can greatly reduce the value of a flight. Feasibility and the realistic scope of the mission are assessed before going out.

[Right after the disappearance]

What should you do when you lose your dog?

The first few steps should create an accurate map of events and a single reliable flow of information. Do not let different groups move around without records, or let an unverified report spread as a confirmed sighting.

01

Mark the last sighting

Save the exact location on a map, the time, direction of travel, circumstances of the disappearance and the person who last saw the dog.

02

Prepare the details

A recent photo, name, size, colour, distinctive markings, temperament, how the dog reacts to people and the microchip number if available.

03

Report the disappearance

Contact veterinary practices and shelters and enter verified details in the official JIC lost-animal database.

Open the JIC database
04

Keep a search map

One person records reports, times and searched zones. If the dog is frightened, a loud group and sudden approach can drive it further away.

05

Ask for a drone assessment

Send the EnergizeDrone team the location, a photo, direction, a description of the terrain and fresh reports so we can check whether a thermal and RGB mission makes sense.

06

Verify every report

Separate a confirmed sighting from an assumption. Keep the reporter’s contact details and ask for the exact place, time, direction and a photo if available.

[When a drone helps]

A wider area surveyed from the air.

The RGB camera provides terrain context, while the thermal camera can isolate the temperature contrast of an animal in the open, along a forest edge or between sparser vegetation. We verify any potential detection before directing the owner or ground team.

Open zonesmeadows, fields, forest edges and hard-to-reach terrain
Cooler parts of the dayoften better contrast, depending on actual conditions
GPS contextmore precise marking of spots to check on the ground
A thermal drone is not an X-ray and not a guarantee of finding your dog.

The camera cannot see through walls, roofs or a dense, opaque canopy. A warm stone, tree stump, wild animal or other source can look like a potential detection. Success depends on where the dog is, the terrain, vegetation, temperature, weather, airspace and the time since it went missing.

[Operational workflow]

What does a drone assessment and search look like?

01

Receiving the details

We review the last location, time, photo, description of the dog, direction, terrain and all current reports.

02

Feasibility assessment

We check weather and thermal conditions, airspace, vegetation, obstacles, safety, Croatian Civil Aviation Agency (HACZ) procedures and the AMC Portal where applicable.

03

Structured survey

We divide zones by priority, track what has been searched and combine the thermal view with RGB context.

04

Verification on the ground

We mark any potential detection and coordinate a check with the owner or team, without unnecessarily disturbing the animal.

[Equipment and approach]

Thermal and RGB views must work together.

A heat signature without visual context is not sufficient confirmation. That is why we examine shape, movement and position in space and compare every suspicious spot with the RGB view.

Quick answers for owners

If the disappearance is recent, save the details first and get in touch. We assess the mission according to the actual location and conditions, without promises that cannot be guaranteed.

Send the details
What should you do first when your dog goes missing?

Write down the exact last known location, time and direction of travel, prepare a recent photo and keep one reliable contact available for reports. Inform veterinary practices, the local shelter and the JIC lost-animal database. Organise the search without a crowd of people who could frighten the dog further.

Who should you call for a drone search for a lost dog?

For an assessment of an RGB and thermal drone search, call EnergizeDrone on +385 95 822 6318 or send the location and a photo via the contact page. The team will check the terrain, airspace, weather, temperature conditions and availability and tell you honestly whether a mission makes sense at that moment.

Can a thermal drone find a dog in a forest?

It can help spot thermal contrast in open areas, along forest edges and between sparser vegetation, especially when the background is cooler. A thermal camera cannot see through a dense, opaque canopy, walls or roofs. Every potential detection must be confirmed with an RGB view and by a team on the ground.

When is the best time for a thermal search?

Early morning, evening or night often give better temperature contrast than the sunny part of the day, but there is no universal rule. The result is affected by the season, how warm the ground and objects are, wind, precipitation, vegetation and the animal’s behaviour. Timing is assessed for the specific location and current conditions.

What information should be sent before a drone search?

Send a clear photo, the dog’s name and description, the exact last known location and time, the likely direction, temperament, behaviour towards strangers, reports so far and a map of areas already searched. Also mention obstacles, power lines, buildings, dense vegetation or other known limitations on the ground.

Does a drone search guarantee that the dog will be found?

No. A drone can search the agreed zones more quickly and give a better view of open or hard-to-reach terrain, but success depends on where the animal is, vegetation, temperature, weather, airspace and the time since it went missing. EnergizeDrone assesses feasibility and does not promise a result that cannot be guaranteed.
